Postby topgeariscool on Sun May 24, 2009 8:48 am

I have been padantic about where I'm from on many ocasion... Saying Thornton Heath opose to Croydon, saying the London borough of Croydon opose to London.

But this is me being vague.

I am from a country that is in a group of countries making up a bigger country that floats like a ('micro-contenant') off the contenant of Europe.

I am from England.

I really want to know if Jeremy Clarkson reads this forum...

I am originally from Chicago, Illinois and currently live between there and Scottsdale, Arizona.

I have been watching TopGear not so legally (youtube, etc) since I stumbled on it quite some time ago and since then have gone to great lengths to not only watch the entirety of the show without BBC America censorship, but also recap everything back to season one. I've been able to find the pirates and such, but I've gone to the expense of obtaining a UK based server of which to stream the iPlayer to watch the latest episodes. BBC America or whomever the idiots in this country are responsible for making us wait for this program should be skinned alive. We "borrow" so much of British programming that it makes me sick that we have so little original thought in this country, but I WISH they'd just stick to importing the real shows as opposed to attempting to re-create them. When I heard the rumors about a Top Gear USA, I begged the powers that be that this would never happen.

There is no way that any American broadcasting company could possibly find the secret chemistry that is Top Gear and I'd bet that any slapping together of an attempt would be with substandard, has-been comics that would be better off taking the place of dead infomercial sales representatives than trying to get BBC Top Gear fans to even giggle.

In true Hollywood fashion, it would be a flash in the pan, grab viewers who wanted to see what it was about and grab cash and run... I am more than happy that this is NOT going to take place here, but I am also extremely happy with Clarkson's response to the American counterpart as being disgusted. That was my first thought and I hope to every power that might be in the sky that they never try and embarrass themselves by attempting at such a thing. Stick to TLC documentaries with rednecks and white trash... It seems to be what we're good at and I give a shit who thinks I'm an ass for saying so.

Without being a TG fanboy, there is no replacement for intelligent humor or well placed jokes. The American public is still somewhat of a throwback to the Three Stooges and only a select pocket of us appreciate and understand this kind of humor. The rest can run off and watch Talladega Nights and still be confused.

Now that I've gotten that off my chest, not that I'm finished by any degree and could go on, I'd like to get to why I am here, but I'd like to know if this website is something that Clarkson actually reads as I'd like to work with him on an article between our two countries about American car companies and their abandonment of the home-town consumer that made them what they were and ultimately squandered...

Ford seems to be on the right track... They're importing from their UK/AU markets... Too little, too late and that's the working title of my article that I'd like Mr. Clarkson's help with.

Yeah! Your not f#@+ing kidding you have rubbish roads (in spite of all the UK taxpayers money being ploughed into your infrastructure through the EU.)! And if you think that's bad you should see the balls ups the Polish make of repairing and rebuilding their roads. Brand new motorway past Poznan to Lodz, but never thought to put in any drainage, so when it rains its only navigable by paddle steamer! Solution - loose 4 inch plastic pipes every 30 yards, held down with a bucketful of crumbly concrete! All funded by the EU (Brits).

Best one I ever saw was in Hungary though. Motorway bridge held up by timber props to stop it falling onto the road below, and a Police car travelling the wrong way up the motorway! Happy days!

Mind you, Norfolk comes a close second for when I saw a trailer loaded with about 25 bales of hay being towed by an old guy on a pushbike (and no spandex in sight.)! Wonder if you could do that with your caravan, Norky? Maybe Mrs. Norky could if you put some spinach in her cocoa.

Dont get the "Norky" bit....however you,ll probably find that the bales of straw were being nicked by some of our caravanning friends with paddy accents....only people that ride bikes round here are our EU friends from Eastern Europe......mind you...no crash hats or lycra...yet...

The 'Norky' term goes back to when the good folk of Norfolk travelled to find work during the winter months to Burton upon Trent. Work was scarce at this time of year for East Anglian farm labourers, but there was plenty of employment for them in the Burton breweries - turning the grain in the maltings.

When the Bass Museum was open (closed down last year by Coor's) they had on display a 'Norky pot'. These were originally given by the brewers to the migrant workers as a gift, or souvenir of their working visit.

I don't think the 'Norky's travelled to the Midlands by caravan though. Nor do I think they went on bicycles, either!

I think it goes back to Victorian times, or maybe earlier. To put it in context, travelling from East Anglia to the Midlands in those days would have been a bigger challenge and adventure than travelling from Poland to Norfolk today. Things don't change essentially, it's just done on a grander scale these days and in this 'smaller' world.
