Top Gear Australia

Postby andrew mcgrath-kerr on Tue Sep 30, 2008 2:12 am

Last night, Monday 29 September 2008, SBS showed its first episode of the Australian edition of Top Gear. I am afraid that the show is not a patch on the BBC edition. I watched the first 15 minutes of the show before turning the tv off. I assumed that Jeremy Richard and James would be hosting the show, coming out to Oz to do it. The hype and build up that SBS did to promote the program did not mention local hosts. Warren Brown was the only host I knew from previous tv shows he had appeared in - notabley driving from Peking to Paris a few years ago in a vintage car.

It would have been interesting from your point of view to see how different driving conditions are here as opposed to driving in Europe.

I did advise SBS and the BBC that it is not of the quality of the UK edition.

PS: You should come to Tasmania and drive in Targa Tasmania.

I also switched off the first show in disgust! but then I thought lets face it, if we're gonna be lumbered with a totally inferior version of Top Gear to what we're all used to, lets give it a second chance an episode or two down the line, so with an open mind I popped a beer, tuned in and.............Turned it off almost as quickly! Now we all now they can't present the program to a standard we are all used to BUT! what godly chance do they stand to improve if they can't even pronounce the names of the cars! They were road testing a MER-SEA-DEES eh? what the hell is a MER-SEA-DEES?

Check out the BBC Knowledge channel on Foxtel Friday's 19.30pm EST for the real thing!
