road chippings on resufacing

Postby who_me on Wed Nov 18, 2009 6:34 pm

Got a bit hacked off by chippings on roadworks, the found this ""Once the bitumen and chippings have been laid, a heavy roller provides an initial degree of embedment but the real work of consolidation is provided by the traffic." on a Council statement on their website. So, I get to do the work of steamroller for them, for free. Hmmmm...

Not to mention the damage to paintwork, broken windscreens and light lenses, punctured tyres, etc, etc.......

Disgraceful way to surface a road. Should be banned purely for safety reasons. Mate of mine hit some loose chippings on a bend surfaced in this way and came off his motorbike a few weeks ago. Result - four broken ribs and a punctured lung. Bike okay though, which is all he was really bothered about. Good job he's a tough bugger!

I remember about ten or fifteen years ago they re-surfaced the M1 near Watford Gap in this way. Caused bloody mayhem afterwards. Wonder which twat thought that was a good idea?

This type of re-surfacing is called surface dressing. It's fine for farm lanes etc, but should not be used for high speed roads. The local authority I worked for years ago ignored this and dressed a high speed link road....... Net result was a large bill for replacement windscreens, and after sticking their heads in the sand for 3 years a very large bill to mill it all off and re-surface with hot rolled asphalt.

I got bored of me just talking about it, so I made a website, it's at http://www.freesteamroller.co.uk, if anyone wants to email in the details of their chipping damage, I'll see if I can't get a register going. There goes my free time..
